The Riesling Challenge Dozen
The Riesling Challenge Dozen is twelve Rieslings made by the most respected Riesling makers in New Zealand.
The competitors were provided with hand harvested Waipara Riesling – each was given every tenth bin hand harvested at the Mud House Glasnevin Road block on April 23 2010.
There were no specific rules in relation to wine-making, except that all wines produced as part of the New Zealand Riesling Challenge must be made – and recorded – strictly in accordance with all export certification rules applying to the vintage.
The finished wines were labelled with each winemaker’s signature on the Riesling Challenge label and packaged in 12 bottle cartons containing one bottle of each of the individual winemakers’ Rieslings.
The winemakers are: Ant McKenzie (Te Awa Wines), Larry McKenna (Escarpment), Mike Brown (Waimea Estate), Paul Bourgeois (Spy Valley), Jules Taylor (Jules Taylor Wines), John Forrest (Forrest Estate), Simon Waghorn (Astrolabe Wines), Patrick Materman (Pernod Ricard NZ), Simon McGeorge (Waipara Hills), Matt Donaldson (Pegasus Bay), Duncan Forsyth (Mount Edward) and Mt Difficulty’s own Matt Dicey.
The Riesling Challenge was judged by Bob Campbell and the competitors themselves, and the winner announced at the Blondie and Pretenders concert at the Mud House winery in mid December. The winner was Matt Donaldson of Pegasus Bay, 2nd place was awarded to Matt Dicey of Mt Difficulty Wines and 3rd place went to Mike Brown from Waimea Estate.
